Eighth seed and 2008 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber was made to work hard for his place in the second round of the Heineken Open on Monday in Auckland, coming from a set down to defeat Argentine Carlos Berlocq 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The German improved to a 15-4 tournament record as he fought back to beat Berlocq in one hour and 42 minutes. After losing the first set to two breaks of serve, he saved all five break points he faced in the rest of the match and broke serve twice in each of the final two sets to seal victory.
World No. 34 Kohlschreiber defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero to win the Auckland title in 2008 and also reached the semi-finals last year (l. to Clement). The German opened his 2011 ATP World Tour season last week with a second-round loss (l. to Karlovic) in Doha.

Past finalist Tommy Robredo made a strong finish to his first-round match at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament, overcoming New Zealand wild card Michael Venus 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-0.
After losing the opening set to the 330th-ranked Venus, Robredo dropped just four points on serve the remainder of the match. He clinched the victory in one hour and 35 minutes as he limited Venus to five points total in the final set.
Former World No. 5 Robredo, who came to Auckland at No. 51 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, is chasing his 400th tour-level match win this week and currently has a 398-251 mark. He reached the final at this ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in 2007, falling to countryman David Ferrer.
Colombian Santiago Giraldo also won in early action Monday, capitalising on all three of his break points while facing the five faced on serve to defeat Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-4.
